Getting Children Afloat

Take to the water like a fish! Exactly how important is learning to swim? As island- dwelling Singaporeans, surrounded by water and nothing else, we should be champions of swimming.

From countless Gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games, to the likes of regionally-known names from Ang Peng Siong to Joscelin Yeo, we have deliberately created for ourselves a niche-- in the sporting arena.

And so, we conveniently decided to start young. Compulsory swimming lessons in primary school (to equip all with the skill), and further streaming kids into Beginners, Intermediate and Advance levels have only upped the competition. Good enough for the sports school? Rigorous training alongside academics then, are the way to go.

The 15th Asian Games Doha

1<img alt=
The 15th Asian Games torch has covered over 50,000km, passed through 15 countries and regions and last night it ignited the astrolabe to signal the formal opening of 15th Asian Games in Doha. Running from December 1 to December 15, the games, billed as "The Games of Your Life," was launched with a flourish of Arabian horses, a train of giant caravans and cultural performances by Qatari children who formed a traditional Qatari sadu carpet as part of the spectacular high tech ceremony celebrating Asia's rich cultures and offering a message of peace.

From its inception in 1951, the Asian Games have become the second largest sporting event in the world, only superseded by the Olympic Summer Games themselves. The 1st Asian Games in New Delhi featured just 11 countries competing in six sports. Doha 2006 will feature 46 disciplines across 39 sports in 424 events, 24 move than the 400 events of the Olympics themselves.
default.aspx.jpg
Full of the usual elements which make up a major sporting event, such as the cute Mascot, Orry the Oryx, the Anthem , the games has been fueled by a three million dollar investment. 10,500 athletes from 45 countries will come to the 15th Asian games and the event will be beamed via satellite to a potential worldwide audience of 3 billion viewers. It is the first time since 1974 that the games have been hosted in the MIddle East/Gulf area and Qatar sees this as their opportunity to show that they are up to Olympic standard in terms of facilities and venues.
