Brain Teasers

brain psychology.jpg

This time, we explore all things that delve into the human mind. Books extolling Sigmund Freud to Carl Jung and other psychological theorists is the running theme of our choices. Not a fan of psychology? Fret not. Murder, mystery and passion are what these psychological thrillers are premised on.

eBooks & eNews Extravaganza @ WRL

wrl_1.JPG

Some of you all may be familiar with our popular training sessions open to both public and staff, where we provide hands-on training in the use of our fantastic eBook and eNews resources, (which as you all know by now are entirely free - al you do is register as a DRS member). This time round, we decided to opt for something slightly different

On the 15th December’, we rolled out the first of our eBooks and eNews Extravaganzas at Woodlands Regional Library. And we would not be doing justice to all those who attended, participated and helped out if we did not admit that it was quite successful.

On a High

Our first venture into schools, and the response was overwhelming. Droves of enthusiastic Dunman High School students rushed into the library to find out everything from “Rihanna to Raffles.”

That’s right, our eResources cover a wide array of subjects, ranging from Pop Culture to History. Students found the session to be useful for their project work. They were introduced to the many resources and services offered for free at NLB’s website, which are readily accessible 24/7.

Business Exclusive

Last week, a training session dedicated exclusively to people interested in business was organised by the Digital Resources and Services Promotions Team. Participants included members of the public and our very own NLB staff. It was ‘profitable’ time spent and participants went home with useful information for their work. Indeed, pictures speak a thousand words. Here are some moments captured during the training session.

Young People Special

Last week, the Digital Library Services Promotions Team organised a database training session. This time round, it was targeted at young people, titled ‘Young People’s Special’.

Indeed, it was a special training dedicated solely to our special young people. Six informative databases were covered in this session namely Ancient and Medieval History Online, Nature.com, World Atlas, Science Online, Grove Art Online and Modern World History Online.

BUSINESS Exclusive: Post Report

Once again, the Digital Library Services Promotions team (yes yours truly) organised yet another database training session. This time round, it was titled “BUSINESS Exclusive Training Session.” Yes, it was as exclusive as it could get.

Five business databases were covered in this session namely Global Insight World Markets Research Centre , ISI Emerging Markets Express , Euromonitor GMID, Factiva.com and last but not least REALIS.

Members of the public keen on business resources attended this session and reaped the benefits (yes, we're confident of that). Ms Satwant Khaira, one of the participants, mentioned that the session “opened up a new world” for her.

We reckon the participants gained some enlightenment as they were amazed with the digital library resources (which we have in great abundance). “Wow! I did not know that the library has so much information resources that can be tapped,” literally exclaimed Ms Balber Kaur, in her feedback form.

So anyway, we (wannabe pro photographers) captured several moments of the training session and here they are.

Caught in the Act

Last month, the Digital Library Services Promotions Team (yours truly!) organised a database training session especially for young people, aged 10-15 years old. Training was conducted for six different databases that are useful to young people, for their schoolwork and even to build their general knowledge.

So just how did the training go? Why not let our exclusive photographs do the talking?

Tell a Story

Till now, I could vividly recall my one and only storytelling experience. After that nerve-wrecking experience, my view of storytellers changed drastically.

Storytelling could be considered to be an art. So you might wonder, what makes storytelling artistic?

Storytelling involves the story, teller and listener. “Storytelling is relating a tale to one or more listeners through voice and gesture,” the National Council of Teachers of English stated, in support of storytelling in the academic classroom.
